Learning Objectives
Introduction
Begin by asking students if they know what syllables are. Share the key idea that words are made up of syllables, and each syllable has one vowel sound. Explain that to count syllables, they can try clapping as they say each part of a word or count how many times their jaw drops as they say each part of the word. Provide a simple example by showing a picture of a cat and clapping out each syllable in the word.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling
Present a picture of a cat and ask students to clap out each syllable as you say the word "cat." Ask, "How many syllables does it have?" Model the clapping and counting process. Show a picture of a hotdog and repeat the process, clapping out each syllable in the word "hotdog." Encourage students to count the syllables using the clapping or jaw-dropping method. Introduce the key idea that each syllable has one vowel sound. Use the example of the word "hamburger" and demonstrate how to count its syllables using both clapping and jaw-dropping techniques.

Guided Practice
Distribute the Guided Practice Worksheet: "Count the Syllables in the Word." In pairs or small groups, students will practice counting syllables in different words and circle the correct number of syllables on the worksheet.
Independent Practice
Distribute the Independent Practice Worksheet: "Count the Syllables in the Word." Students will individually list the number of syllables for each word on the worksheet. Monitor and assess for misconceptions, providing intervention as needed.
Differentiation
Support
Provide additional support by offering one-on-one assistance to students who may struggle with counting syllables.
Extension
Challenge advanced students by introducing longer words and encouraging them to find more complex words in their environment to practice counting syllables.
Assessment
Assess students' understanding through observation during guided and independent practice, as well as through the exit ticket.
Review and closing
Have students independently clap out the syllables in a given word on an exit ticket. Collect and assess to gauge understanding.
Misconceptions
Be aware that students may confuse the number of sounds with the number of syllables. Address this by reinforcing the concept that each syllable has one vowel sound.
