    LESSON INSTRUCTION

    INTRODUCTION
    1. Begin by reviewing with students what addition means and what the plus sign (+) represents.
    2. Explain that we can use addition models to help us understand addition problems better.
    3. Show students an addition model card with manipulatives and ask them to identify what they see.
    4. Introduce the addition sentence cards and explain that they will be matching these sentences to the addition model cards.
    INSTRUCTION
    1. Model how to read an addition model card and match it to the correct addition sentence card.
    2. Explain that addition models can have different representations (e.g., objects, numbers, pictures) and that it is important to understand what each representation means.
    3. Demonstrate how to use manipulatives to create an addition model and then match it to the correct addition sentence card.
    4. Write an addition sentence on the whiteboard and ask students to help you create an addition model that matches the sentence.
    GUIDED PRACTICE
    1. Provide students with addition model cards and addition sentence cards.
    2. Work through the problems together as a class, with students identifying the correct addition sentence card that matches each addition model card.
    3. Use manipulatives to demonstrate how to create addition models and match them to the correct addition sentence card.
    4. Encourage students to ask questions and provide feedback.

      INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
      1. Provide students with a worksheet containing addition models and addition sentence cards.
      2. Instruct students to match each addition model card to the correct addition sentence card.
      3. Circulate around the room to provide support and guidance as needed.

        HOMEWORK
        1. Ask students to create their own addition models using manipulatives (e.g., counters, cubes).
        2. Instruct students to write the matching addition sentence on a piece of paper or a whiteboard.
        3. Encourage students to practice reading and matching addition models and sentences with family or friends.
        4. Remind students to bring their homework back to class to share with their classmates.

          EXIT TICKET
          1. Provide each student with an addition model card.
          2. Instruct students to create their own addition model and write the matching addition sentence on a whiteboard.

            ASSESSMENT
            1. Ask students to share one addition model they created and the matching addition sentence.

              1. Review with students what they learned about addition models and matching addition sentence cards.
              2. Encourage students to continue practicing addition by creating their own addition models and writing matching addition sentences.

                EXTENSION
                1. Students can practice creating their own addition models with different manipulatives (e.g., base ten blocks, fraction circles).
                2. Students can practice writing their own addition sentence cards to match their addition models.
                3. Students can practice solving addition problems without manipulatives.
                INTERVENTION
                1. For students who struggle with fine motor skills, larger and easier to grasp manipulatives can be used.
                2. For students who need extra support, a visual aid or diagram can be provided to help them understand the concept of addition models and matching addition sentence cards.

                STANDARD

                Common Core Standard:

                1.OA.B.3 - Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.2 Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
