LESSON INSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION

  1. Display a subtraction word problem card, such as "Farmer Williamson has 8 pineapples to sell at the market. 3 pineapples sell. How many pineapples are left? 8 − 3 ="
  2. Ask students if they know what a subtraction word problem is.
  3. Explain that a subtraction word problem is a story problem where something is taken away or removed.
  4. Explain that we can use manipulatives and number sentences to solve subtraction word problems.

INSTRUCTION

  1. Model how to solve a subtraction word problem using manipulatives and a number sentence.
  2. Choose a subtraction word problem card and use manipulatives to act out the problem.
  3. Write a number sentence to represent the problem and solve it together.
  4. Explain the strategy used to solve the problem, such as counting backwards or taking away.

GUIDED PRACTICE

  1. Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with a subtraction word problem card and manipulatives.
  2. Instruct the students to work together to solve the problem using manipulatives and a number sentence.
  3. Circulate around the room to provide support and guidance as needed.

    INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

    1. Instruct students to work independently to solve subtraction word problems using manipulatives and number sentences.
    2. Monitor students' progress and provide support as needed.

      HOMEWORK

      1. Provide each student with a worksheet pack containing subtraction word problems to solve using manipulatives and number sentences.
      2. Instruct students to complete at least 3 word problems and show their work using manipulatives and number sentences.
      3. Encourage students to ask for help or clarification if needed.
      4. Optional: Students can create their own subtraction word problem and solve it using manipulatives and a number sentence.
