LESSON INSTRUCTION
INTRODUCTION
- Review the concept of addition with the students by using manipulatives to create simple addition problems such as 2 + 2 = 4.
- Introduce the vocabulary words for the lesson: addition, add, plus, total, more, together.
INSTRUCTION
- Display an addition word problem card and read it aloud to the students.
- Model how to write an addition sentence that matches the word problem, such as 2 + 1 = 3.
- Explain to the students that the plus sign means "and," and the equal sign means "the answer is."
- Repeat this process with a few more word problem cards, making sure to model how to read the word problem and write the addition sentence.
GUIDED PRACTICE
- Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with a set of addition word problem cards and number sentence strips.
- Instruct the students to work together to read each word problem, write an addition sentence to match, and then solve the problem using manipulatives.
- Circulate around the room to provide support and guidance as needed.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
- Instruct students to work independently to complete the addition word problem worksheet, reading each problem, writing the addition sentence to match, and then solving the problem using manipulatives.
- Monitor students' progress and provide support as needed.
HOMEWORK
Homework is not practiced in all schools. In this curriculum, homework is used for additional practice from daily lessons. Assignment of homework should be done on a case-by-case basis and working in conjunction with the student's home support team.
EXIT TICKET
- Provide each student with a whiteboard and marker.
- Display an addition word problem card and instruct students to write the addition sentence to match the problem.
- Collect the whiteboards to assess students' understanding.
ASSESSMENT
- The exit ticket and progress monitoring assessments will be used to determine students' mastery of reading and writing addition word problems and solving addition problems within 10.
CLOSURE
- Review the vocabulary words for the lesson and have students repeat them.
- Ask students to share one thing they learned about addition word problems today, and write their responses on the board.
- Encourage students to continue practicing reading and writing addition word problems and solving addition problems using manipulatives.
EXTENSION

Introduce the concept of regrouping or carrying over in addition. Provide word problems with two-digit numbers and encourage students to use manipulatives or a number line to solve the problems, including those that require regrouping.
