LESSON INSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION

  1. Begin by writing a sentence on the whiteboard without any spaces between the words (e.g. "Iliketoeatpizza").
  2. Ask the students if they can read the sentence and what they notice about it.
  3. Explain that in print, words are separated by spaces, and demonstrate by writing the same sentence with spaces between the words.

INSTRUCTION

  1. Distribute the sentence strips to the class, each containing a sentence with incorrect spacing (e.g. "Thesuncameouttoday" or "Iwenttothebeachwithmyfamily").
  2. Write the sentences on chart paper for students to see.
  3. Instruct the students to read the sentences and discuss with a partner whether they are spaced correctly or not.
  4. After a few minutes, ask for volunteers to share their answers and explain why they think the sentence is or is not spaced correctly.

GUIDED PRACTICE

  1. Distribute the index cards to the students, each containing a sentence with correct spacing (e.g. "The dog ran in the park." or "I like to play with my friends.").
  2. Ask the students to read the sentences and choose one sentence that they will write on their own index card.
  3. Have the students exchange index cards with a partner and read the sentence.
  4. Instruct the students to decide if the sentence is spaced correctly or not, and explain their reasoning to their partner.
  5. After a few minutes, ask for volunteers to share their answers and reasoning.

    INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

    1. Distribute a worksheet with sentences that have incorrect spacing (e.g. "Wearegoingtothezoo" or "Theschoolbuswillarriveat8am").
    2. Instruct the students to circle the incorrect sentences and write them correctly on the lines provided.
    3. Monitor students' progress and provide support as needed.

      HOMEWORK

      1. Assign students to look for examples of correctly spaced sentences in their reading materials at home.
      2. Encourage students to bring their examples to share with the class during the next lesson.

        EXIT TICKET

        1. Write a sentence on the whiteboard without any spaces between the words.
        2. Instruct the students to rewrite the sentence with correct spacing.

          ASSESSMENT

          1. Observe students' participation in class discussions and their ability to choose correctly spaced sentences.
          2. Review the students' completed worksheets to assess their understanding of word separation in print.

            2. Emphasize the importance of correct spacing in print for clear communication.

              • Students can practice writing their own sentences with correct spacing.

              INTERVENTION

              • For students who struggle with word separation, provide additional support through one-on-one instruction or small group activities.
              • For students who need extra support, provide sentence strips with visual cues, such as small dots or lines, to help them identify where words should be separated.
              • For students who are more advanced, challenge them to identify sentences with incorrect spacing and explain why they are incorrect.

              TEACHING TIPS
