LESSON INSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION

  1. Display a few sight word flashcards on the board.
  2. Engage students in a discussion about reading and writing words. Ask if they recognize any of the words on the flashcards.
  3. Explain that sight words are words that appear frequently in texts and are important to learn because they can't always be sounded out.
  4. Share that today they will learn to identify, read, and write some common sight words.

INSTRUCTION

  1. Show the list of the first 20 Dolch Pre-Primer sight words in bullet points.
  2. Introduce each sight word individually, showing the flashcard and pronouncing the word. Have students repeat after you.
  3. Write the sight word on the board and explain its meaning if necessary.
  4. Show a simple sentence containing the sight word on a sentence strip and read it aloud.
  5. Explain that they will practice creating sentences with the sight words later.

GUIDED PRACTICE

  1. Distribute individual whiteboards and markers to students.
  2. Display a sight word on the board and ask students to write it on their whiteboards.
  3. Repeat with several sight words, encouraging students to practice writing each word.
  4. Call on students to come up and identify sight words on flashcards, promoting active engagement.

    INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

    1. Divide students into pairs.
    2. Provide each pair with a set of picture cards and sentence strips.
    3. Instruct students to choose a sight word and use it in a sentence, using the picture cards for inspiration.
    4. Circulate to offer support and monitor progress.

      HOMEWORK

      1. Assign students to practice reading the sight words to their family members at home. Provide a printed list of the sight words for reference.

        EXIT TICKET

        1. Distribute index cards to students and ask them to write as many sight words as they can remember on it.
        2. Have students come up and read their sight word to you before leaving the class.

          ASSESSMENT

          1. During independent practice, observe students' sentence creation to gauge their ability to use the sight words accurately.
          2. Conduct a brief one-on-one assessment where students read a list of sight words from flashcards.

            CLOSURE

            1. Review the sight words learned during the lesson.
            2. Ask students to share a sentence they created using one of the sight words.

              EXTENSION

              • Challenge advanced students to write short stories using as many sight words as possible.
              • Encourage students to find sight words in their favorite storybooks.

              INTERVENTION

              • Provide additional practice time for struggling students.
              • Offer individual support to students who find it difficult to identify or write sight words.
