LESSON INSTRUCTION
INTRODUCTION
- Begin by displaying the place value chart on the board.
- Review the concept of place value with the students, reminding them that each digit in a number has a specific value depending on its position in the number.
- Explain to students that they will be learning how to read and write numbers in word form and how to identify the place value of each digit in a number.
- Display a number, such as 830, on the board and ask the students to identify the digit in the tens place. Have them share their responses with the class.
INSTRUCTION
- Provide a clear definition of the term word form.
- Display the number 234 on the board and explain to the students how to write this number in word form, modeling the process on the board. Encourage students to follow along.
- Show the place value chart and explain that each digit has a specific place value: ones, tens, and hundreds.
- Display a number on the board, such as 472, and explain how to identify the place value of each digit. Have the students practice identifying the place value of each digit in different numbers.
- Provide additional examples, gradually increasing the complexity of the numbers, and have students practice writing them in word form and identifying the place value of each digit.
GUIDED PRACTICE
- Divide the class into pairs and distribute index cards with numbers written on them.
- Instruct the students to work together to write the number on the card in word form and to identify the place value of each digit.
- Walk around the room to provide support and guidance as needed.
- After a designated amount of time, bring the class back together to review the answers and discuss any questions or challenges that came up during the guided practice.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
- Provide students with a worksheet containing numbers written in standard form and ask them to write the number in word form and identify the place value of each digit.
- Encourage students to use the strategies they learned during the instruction and guided practice portions of the lesson.
