Game Name: Number Match-Up

Grade Level: Preschool - Kindergarten

Objective: To reinforce the skill of matching numbers to sets of objects and identifying numbers 1 to 3 by sight.

Materials:

  • Flashcards with numbers 1 to 3

  • Counting objects such as blocks, buttons or beads

  • A timer

  • A bowl or container

Instructions:

  1. Divide the students into pairs or small groups.

  2. Spread the counting objects out on a table or other flat surface.

  3. Shuffle the flashcards and place them face-down in the bowl or container.

  4. Set the timer for 1 minute.

  5. Instruct the students to take turns drawing a flashcard from the bowl and counting out the corresponding number of objects from the table.

  6. Once they have counted out the objects, they must place them in a separate pile or container.

  7. The next student then takes their turn, and so on, until the timer goes off.

  8. At the end of the round, have the students count the number of objects in their pile and check it against the number on their flashcard.

  9. Award one point for each correct match.

  10. Repeat the game for several rounds, or until all students have had multiple turns.

  11. At the end of the game, declare a winner or have all students celebrate their progress in matching numbers to sets of objects.

Variations:

  • To make the game more challenging, increase the number of objects or use larger numbers.

  • Instead of using a timer, have students race to see who can match the most numbers correctly in a set amount of time.

  • For older students, use flashcards with higher numbers and/or more complex sets of objects, such as mixed shapes or colors.
