When teaching CVC words, adhere to this skill progression:

  1. Address Prerequisites: *Ensure students are proficient in recognizing letter sounds. *Solidify their grasp of short vowel sounds. *Develop fundamental phonemic awareness skills, including identifying beginning, middle, and ending sounds, as well as the ability to blend and segment sounds within CVC words.

  2. Read and Combine Onsets and Rimes (within CVC words).

  3. Sound out each of the three sounds in the CVC word and combine them.

  4. Gradually blend the sounds together audibly, employing a slurred sounding-out technique.

  5. Finally, visually scan and read the entire word.

An additional valuable tip for CVC word instruction is to focus on one short vowel sound at a time. Begin by teaching short 'a' words, followed by short 'e' words, short 'o' words, and so forth.
