Meet Our Student: A Snapshot of Current Skills


Before we dive into crafting an effective IEP Present Levels Statement, let's acquaint ourselves with the student we'll be working with:


Student's Current Proficiencies:

  1. Mastery of Multiplication: Our student possesses a solid grasp of multiplication tables for factors 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10. This means they can swiftly and accurately calculate products within these factors (skip counting strategy).

  2. Division Fluency: The student demonstrates proficiency in division facts for factors 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10, showcasing their ability to efficiently divide numbers within these categories.

Areas Requiring Improvement:


However, our student faces challenges in the following areas:

  1. Incomplete Multiplication Tables: When it comes to multiplication tables for factors 6, 7, 8, and 9, our student encounters difficulties. These factors remain unmastered, hindering their overall mathematical fluency.

  2. Division Deficits: Similarly, our student struggles with division facts pertaining to factors 6, 7, 8, and 9, presenting a barrier to their mathematical proficiency.

Accommodation Utilized:


To support their learning, our student employs a multiplication chart as an accommodation, emphasizing the importance of tailored strategies to meet their unique educational needs.


Student Profile: Grade Level and Educational Standard

Our student is currently in the 3rd grade, and their educational journey aligns with the educational standard 3.OA.C.7. This standard emphasizes the importance of fluently multiplying and dividing within 100, calling upon students to employ strategies like recognizing the interplay between multiplication and division, and understanding the properties of operations.


The Teacher's IEP Goal: A Path to Progress

To address our student's needs and align with the educational standard, the teacher has meticulously crafted the following IEP goal:


Base Goal:


"By (insert date), when presented with multiplication and division problems, the student will fluently multiply and divide within 100, thereby enhancing their operations and algebraic thinking skills. This progress will be evidenced by an improvement from 0/10 correct work samples out of ten consecutive trials to 8/10 correct work samples in ten consecutive trials."

Whenever a learning standard employs the word 'and,' it signals the presence of multiple interconnected skills essential to achieving the goal.

Specific Modified Goals:


"By (insert date), when presented with problems involving Multiplication Tables for Factors 6, 7, 8, and 9, the student will independently and accurately complete multiplication tables to 100, enhancing their operations and algebraic thinking skills. This progress will be evidenced by an improvement from 2/10 correct work samples out of ten consecutive trials to 8/10 correct work samples in ten consecutive trials."


"By (insert date), when presented with problems involving division facts related to factors 6, 7, 8, and 9, the student will exhibit competence in division facts with in 100, thereby enhancing their operations and algebraic thinking skills. This progress will be evidenced by an improvement from 1/10 correct work samples out of ten consecutive trials to 8/10 correct work samples in ten consecutive trials."
