Academic Benefits:

Playing the Ten Frame Race game can have several academic benefits for students, including:

Developing Number Sense: Ten frames are a visual representation of numbers, and using them can help students better understand number sense. By placing counting objects on the ten frame, students are able to see the relationship between numbers and their corresponding visual representation.

Strengthening Counting Skills: Counting is a foundational math skill that is essential for success in more advanced math concepts. The Ten Frame Race game provides a fun and engaging way for students to practice counting to 3 (or higher) using ten frames and counting objects.

Promoting Teamwork and Collaboration: The game encourages students to work together and support each other as they race to complete the ten frame. By playing in pairs or small groups, students can practice communication skills, turn-taking, and sportsmanship.

Enhancing Fine Motor Skills: Placing counting objects on the ten frame requires fine motor skills, such as grasping and manipulating small objects. The game can help students improve their fine motor skills while also developing their math abilities.

Game: Ten Frame Race

Grade Level: Preschool - Kindergarten

Objective: To reinforce the concept of counting to 3 using a ten frame.

  • Ten frames (one per player)

  • Counting objects (such as counters or cubes)

  • Stopwatch or timer

  1. Divide students into pairs and provide each pair with a ten frame and counting objects.

  2. Have each pair line up at one end of the room or play area.

  3. When the game starts, each player must place one counting object on the ten frame and say the number 1.

  4. The players continue to take turns placing objects on the ten frame, counting up to 3.

  5. The first player to place three objects on the ten frame and say "3" wins the game.

  6. If players make a mistake or miscount, they must start over.

  7. Keep track of the time it takes for each pair to finish the game.

  8. After each round, have players switch partners and play again.

  9. The pair with the shortest combined time to complete the game wins.

  • Increase the number on the ten frame to 5 or 10 for more advanced students.

  • Allow students to work in larger groups or as individuals for a longer game.

  • Instead of using counting objects, have students draw pictures or use stickers to represent the numbers on the ten frame.

The Ten Frame Race game is an excellent tool to help students strengthen their counting skills while having fun. Students can develop their number sense and fine motor skills by using ten frames and counting objects while collaborating and working with their peers.
