Alphabet Adventure Relay is an engaging and interactive game designed to help students practice recognizing and naming uppercase letters of the alphabet. The game combines physical activity with learning, promoting teamwork, communication, memory, and fine motor skills development.

Materials Included:
2 sets of 26 flashcards with uppercase letters (one letter per card)
2 sets of alphabet game cards

Set-Up:

  • Tape or attach the flashcards with adhesive putty along one side of the room, spaced out evenly.
  • Divide the students into two equal teams.
  • Provide each team with a set of alphabet game cards for reference.
  • Place an empty bin or basket in front of each team from the flashcards on the opposite side of the room.
  • Prepare a timer (optional).

Gameplay:

  • Explain the rules of the relay race to the students.
  • One student from each team will go at a time.
  • The first student in each team will look at the top game card from their reference pile, run to the flashcards on the wall, find the matching uppercase letter, take it down, and bring it back to place in their team's bin or basket.
  • Once the student returns, the next student in line will take their turn, looking at the next flashcard or printed letter and finding the matching uppercase letter on the wall.
  • The relay race continues until one team has collected all 26 uppercase letters in their bin or basket.
  • If using a timer, see which team can complete the relay race in the shortest amount of time.

Teaching:

  • Before the game, discuss the importance of uppercase letter recognition and its role in reading and writing.
  • Demonstrate how to find and match the uppercase letters during the relay race.
  • After the game, gather the students together to review the uppercase letters.
  • Encourage students to share any challenges they encountered and discuss strategies for recognizing and naming the letters more efficiently.

Scoring:

  • The team that collects all 26 uppercase letters in their bin or basket first wins the game.
  • If using a timer, the team that completes the relay race in the shortest amount of time wins the game.
  • For a less competitive approach, focus on the learning process and teamwork rather than declaring a winner.
