Objective: Students will practice recognizing and naming uppercase letters of the alphabet while participating in a fun and engaging relay race.

Materials:

  • 2 sets 26 index cards with uppercase letters (one letter per card)

  • 2 sets of alphabet flashcards or printed uppercase letters (for reference)

  • Tape or adhesive putty

  • 2 empty bins or baskets

  • Timer (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Before the game, write each uppercase letter of the alphabet on an index card. Tape or attach the index cards with adhesive putty along one side of the room, spaced out evenly.

  2. Divide the students into two equal teams. Provide each team with a set of alphabet flashcards or printed uppercase letters for reference. Place an empty bin or basket in front of each team at the opposite side of the room from the index cards.

  3. Explain the rules of the relay race to the students. One student from each team will go at a time. The first student in each team will look at the top flashcard or printed letter from their reference pile, and then run to the index cards on the wall, find the matching uppercase letter, take it down, and bring it back to place in their team's bin or basket.

  4. Once the student returns, the next student in line will take their turn, looking at the next flashcard or printed letter and finding the matching uppercase letter on the wall.

  5. The relay race continues until one team has collected all 26 uppercase letters in their bin or basket. If you would like to make the game more challenging or competitive, you can use a timer to see which team can complete the relay race in the shortest amount of time.

  6. After the game, gather the students together to review the uppercase letters. Encourage students to share any challenges they encountered and discuss strategies for recognizing and naming the letters more efficiently.

This game provides a fun, active way for students to practice recognizing and naming uppercase letters of the alphabet while also encouraging teamwork and collaboration.
